Tue Mar 24 21:18:23 PST 1998 — PacBell recently installed 96 new lines on four T1 PRI trunks, and it seems that they failed to setup the hunting so that they would be usable. We’re opening a repair ticket with PacBell right now, and expect to have this fixed before prime time tommorow. Sorry for the busy signals tonight. Note that once this is correctly configured, we will have 887 total ports. -Dane

Thu Mar 19 09:52:10 PST 1998 — Our line utilization graph is back online after a month long absense. It was offline because we upgraded the RADIUS authentication server to a faster better version, and the new version didn’t have the features to track usage this way. We’ve changed the way that we’re gathering this data, and it’s back online. The line utilization graph is again available at: www.sonic.net/lines/

Wed Mar 18 10:02:50 PST 1998 — We’ve changed the way that the FTP space is mounted on the server so that the .snapshot live backup filesystem is not visible within the public ftp space. We’re hoping that this will solve problems with customers ending up in the snapshot area where they cannot upload, and with remote FTP users getting files which are out of date.

Mon Mar 16 15:50:04 PST 1998 — Our friends at HREF tools have setup a great resource for Sonic members. Our local Sonic newsgroups are a valuable resource for both new members and for those who are publishing on the Internet or just using the net. HREF has put together a search tool to make the entire set of groups full text searchable. Sun Mar 15 10:06:55 PST 1998 — Our news server has had a few troubles over the past week, most of them related to an upgrade of the INN server software. The news server is offline as of 10:00am Sunday, and will be back online within about 20 minutes. We’ve backed out of the INN upgrade, so this downtime is because of something else.

Sun Mar 1 12:32:54 PST 1998 — In the wake of Saturday’s front page Press Democrat article, some folks in our news:sonic.general newsgroup have expressed concerns about the integrity of their data on Sonic. I would like to point out that a) no one has broken into Sonic, and b) during these operations, we took the privacy of our members very seriously, and indeed, re-engineered our network to that end. Sun Mar 1 12:30:27 PST 1998 — Brooks Fiber, our telephone company in San Jose, is currently working on a problem at our San Jose facility. The lines there are currently out of service — I’m working to get that resolved ASAP. Sorry about the inconvenience. -Scott

Wed Feb 25 09:35:04 PST 1998 — Between 4:30am and 5am this morning, we had some network problems which brought a number of terminal servers offline. It appears that the news server was at fault. Scott was covering the graveyard shift and took care of things. -Dane

Wed Feb 25 14:06:34 PST 1998 — Our news server was offline briefly when it’s networking started having timeout problems. A quick reboot brought it back online. -Dane

Sun Feb 22 12:02:56 PST 1998 — While bringing up a backup ISDN connection for a customer who’s been affected by a PacBell fiber cut, we’ve goofed up routing on nas21.sonic.net, one of our terminal servers. We’ll have it fixed up in a few minutes. This only affects PPP users who are connected via nas21. -Dane
