Web Hosting Outbound Email Outage

On June 2nd, 2026 our Operations team discovered that emails sent directly from customer Web Hosting sites were being rejected before leaving our network. Over the next 24 hours, we identified and fixed the related firewall and DNS settings to restore service. Per our outbound email logs, we expect most outbound emails from customer websites were rejected between 3:30pm on May 13th, 2026 and 11:00pm on June 3rd, 2026. All systems are confirmed working at this time. If you suspect or know of any problems with email for your Web Hosting service(s), please reach out to our Customer Support team.

Web Hosting Instability

UPDATE: We have restored our Web Hosting platform to regular service. Our teams will be reviewing logs and monitoring data to better coordinate future responses to attacks and improve resiliency.

Starting around 4:30pm PST today, our Operations team noticed a pattern of requests matching a distributed denial-of-service attack directed at our web hosting cluster. As a result, hosted websites, including pages at users.sonic.net, have suffered from intermittent availability. Both our Network and Systems teams are currently working on mitigation measures to slow down and stop the attack on our services.

Email Issues (POP3/IMAP/Webmail)

This morning, starting just before 6:00AM PST, one of our IMAP mail servers started causing errors for a small number of mailboxes assigned to it. Symptoms included failure to retrieve emails, failed logins, and general slowness. Our operations team was notified by Customer Support of the resulting email outage as of 9:00AM and restarted the impacted server to return it to normal service by 9:15AM. Inbound Email Delays for July 25th

Our Operations Team has found and corrected a problem which caused inbound emails to sonic.net (and other domains for which Sonic handles email) to take longer than expected to be delivered to their corresponding mailboxes.

Per our logging, inbound email delivery would have experienced delays between approximately 3:10pm and 6:20pm PST today. (July 25, 2024) Outbound email processing was not impacted. We are not aware of any lost messages due to these delays. We will investigate the root cause of this incident and will be adding monitoring to ensure we can swiftly respond in the future.
