Sat May 15 17:41:57 PDT 1999 — UC Berkeley and the SETI project have launched an exciting collaborative computing effort that you may want to participate in. The SETI@home project harnesses the computing power of hundreds of thousands of Internet connected PCs to do data analysis on radio telescope information. The goal is to find life beyond Earth. The application runs as a screensaver on your PC or Mac, and you can watch a visual representation of the math that it’s doing. To participate, see the website at:

Sat May 15 13:10:15 PDT 1999 — In order to improve news arrival time here, we’ve added a new feed from RemarQ Communities, formerly Supernews. RemarQ specializes in Usenet feeds and should be able to deliver a faster feed that the ones we’re currently getting from our peers and upstream backbones. This brings us to six concurrent feeds. -Dane

Mon May 10 12:35:58 PDT 1999 — Our Monday audit of the dial group found one bad modem in the 1001 dial group and one in the 1003 group. The failure in the 1001 group was causing three rings until answer, so that would increase the amount of time users would wait for a connection. The failure in 1003 was causing an answer, and silence – this meant that an unlucky user who hit this unit would not get connected, and would have to retry. The 1001 group overflows to 1002, and 1002 overflows to 1003, so the dial and silence trouble could have affect customers calling any of these groups. Both of these troubles have been cleared now. -Dane

Thu May 6 11:08:35 PDT 1999 — This morning’s ftp problems were due to a single file — a game for the NeoGeo. From reading the connection logs, it appears that darned near the entire country of Japan is dogpiling on our FTP server.

Because of the impact, we are denying connections to our ftp server from the .jp domain. Even so, we are receiving about 7 connections per second from .jp hosts, which we suspect will continue until after prime-time (Japan time). Once that load goes down, we will re-enable access for the domain. -Scott
