Thu Jun 5 18:10:14 PDT 1997 — Someone in Germany seems to have gotten upset with one of our customers and decided to flood them off the Internet. The resulting traffic caused problems with pm8 and pm9 this afternoon, so if you noticed odd slow performance or disconnects around 4:30pm, this might explain it. We’ve blocked traffic from the offending host. -Dane
Thu Jun 5 03:18:34 PDT 1997 — news.sonic.net (Ultra) was down from 1:59am until about 2:50am to swap out the Ethernet card. Please see my post in sonic.help (thread: ‘…this is silly’ 🙂 for more information. -Scott
Update – this seems to have improved performance on the LAN quite a bit, please follow up in the newsgroup if you were experiencing performance problems with news and let us know how it’s working now. -Dane

Tue Jun 3 02:33:58 PDT 1997 — I’ll be rebooting the shell server (Bolt) at 3:30am. This is an opportunity to get the new Cheetah drive on the SCSI bus, so I’ll do that. Bolt will be back in action at 4:00am. -Scott
Tue May 27 20:35:45 PDT 1997 — Sonic is expanding it’s offices, and you can watch the work in progress. Using an Axis Neteye 200 which we’ve mounted on the wall in our new office space, you can view the construction as it progresses over the next month. Real time images plus an archive are available. They’ve torn down a few walls and framed some new ones, plus taken out the carpet, ceiling tiles and some glass. In the next few weeks they’ll be finishing up the walls and drywall, painting and installing carpet and furniture. We’re hoping to be moved in on July 1st. See all the fun at: www.sonic.net/neteye/

Thu May 22 09:53:55 PDT 1997 — Our FTP server was impacted by a large number of off-site users downloading a pirated registered version of Duke Nukem 3D. Please don’t distribute pirated software from our FTP server! For a few hours this morning local users were unable to login and upload web pages, etc. Note that if you have trouble at ftp.sonic.net, you can also connect via ftp to shell.sonic.net. -Dane
Tue May 20 10:17:31 PDT 1997 — As you may have heard, Windows systems have a networking bug which may allow a remote system or user to crash your desktop system while you are connected to the Internet. Tue May 20 14:07:11 PDT 1997 — In our continuing efforts to cut down on unsolicited commercial email and SPAM, we have implemented domain name verification on inbound mail. This means that we’ll no longer get mail from make@money.fast, no@reply.here and other such bogus domains.
