Mail server upgrades.

Thu Aug 26 14:55:42 PDT 1999 — Mail server upgrades. We have shifted mail traffic to a new mail server, Prop.sonic.net. Prop is a clone of Sub, the old mail server, which means it is _not_ running qmail. We are monitoring the new host, and expect this transition to be much more seemless than our last try at upgrading. -Scott and Eli

Tue Aug 24 09:53:30 PDT 1999 — The web server that serves our multihomes (Thunder) required another reboot this morning. The error message was ‘No free inodes – Contact Linus’, which I will not undertake until we’ve checked some other things first. Downtime was about 8 minutes, and we will continue to investigate the issue. – Eli and DaveJ

Tue Aug 24 09:02:10 PDT 1999 — After recieving complaints that some people could not see web sites beyond sonic.net, I did some investigation and found one of our terminal servers had lost its default route. I added it back in and all is well. We apologize for any frustration this may have caused. – Steve

Mon Aug 23 21:56:29 PDT 1999 — After much fuss with PacBell, we’ve got the downed PRI circuits back online. A correction on the previous MOTD – this trouble took offline 25% of the capacity in just one hunt group, the 1003 group. This is just 184 phone lines, _not- 25% of our total capacity. We did return some busy signals in that group this evening, as it took PacBell until 9:30pm to get the circuits back online. -Dane

More mail maintenance.

Mon Aug 23 17:21:01 PDT 1999 — More mail maintenance. Our new mail server was configured for 50 local simultaneous deliveries, resulting in degraded performace. We’ve backed that down to a saner 7 simultaneous deliveries, which should improve performance immensely. If it doesn’t, we’ll be backing out of this change and transitioning to two servers. We apologize for the mail delays during the transition. -Scott and Eli

On Saturday the 21st we had a terminal server

Mon Aug 23 16:03:59 PDT 1999 — On Saturday the 21st we had a terminal server failure, this took down 25% of our dialup capacity and our multi-link PPP server. We were able to get it back online today and now we are working with PacBell to get the downed PRIs back online. This should be fixed by the end of the day. The multi-link PPP issues (multi-link across chassis) will be fixed after a 2:00 am reboot of the 1003 dialup pool. Sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused anyone. – Steve and DaveJ

Fri Aug 20 13:02:58 PDT 1999 — Supernews/RemarQ had incorrect configuration on our expanded network blocks, and this meant that some users were unable to read news using supernews.sonic.net. We’ve had them fix up the numbers, and all’s well. -Dane
