Fri Jun 27 06:06:00 PDT 1997 — At about 3:45am, UUNet performed maintenance in San Jose which resulted in some routing instability. We compensated by directing inbound packets to our MCI connection. Normal routing was restored about 5:55am. -Scott

Fri Jun 27 03:56:41 PDT 1997 — UUNet is doing some work in San Jose… night owls may be noticing strange routing. I’m shutting down the UUNet connect until the work is completed. Global routing should stabilize via MCI in a few minutes. -Scott

Thu Jun 26 19:31:31 PDT 1997 — We’ve deployed a new FTP server here as an upgrade to ftp.sonic.net. The new server has more CPU and disk, and will be able to handle larger user loads. All data has been moved, and users should not notice any changes. If you see any problems, please post to news:sonic.help -Dane

Wed Jun 18 22:48:07 PDT 1997 — AOL is again having trouble keeping up with the amount of incoming mail that they’ve got. This has caused large backlogs and delivery delays for mail headed to AOL from Sonic. Currently we’ve got about 29424 messages in queue for AOL recipients. If you’ve got friends on AOL and if timely mail delivery is important, recommend that they get an ISP. In my opinion, AOL’s network is undersized for the load, and they can’t keep up. -Dane

Sun Jun 15 17:25:57 PDT 1997 — Something caused massive problems with our 3Com Ethernet switch, the core of our network. Most network devices were basicly unable to talk to others, so users couldn’t get logged in or use any services for about 20 minutes. We’re trying to pin down the cause. A second switch was added last week, so perhaps it’s caused some sort of problem. Sorry for the downtime! -Dane

Sat Jun 14 18:07:03 PDT 1997 — The Internic is expanding and relocating, and this may cause some brief service interruption. The Internic controls top level domain registration, and when you try to look up a system by name which is not in cache, it may fail if they are offline. They say that they are working to minimize the impact of their move, and the expansion should improve telephone and online support for domain holders. If you get ‘DNS timeout’ type errors, it’s probably due to the work they are doing. -Dane (Info from Eric E.)

Fri Jun 13 00:32:05 PDT 1997 — We’ve upgraded our telephone system to a new unit which provides slick queue handling, more expansion and better administrative functions. Technical support now has a new number, 707-547-3400 and help is is still available from 9am to 9pm Monday to Friday. Of course, if you’re reading this, you’re online and should be using resources at www.sonic.net/help/ so perhaps announcing this in the MOTD doesn’t serve much purpose. However, if you’re recommending Sonic, you can note that our telephone support services have improved. -Dane

Wed Jun 11 17:39:14 PDT 1997 — We’d like to remind users that running bots, servers and offline processes is not allowed. These programs take up system resources that are reserved for other users. Examples are eggdrop, mudbot, ircd, etc. Thanks! -Dane
