Fri Mar 21 06:13:53 PST 1997 — Sub (mail.sonic.net) was being finicky about ejecting a tape, so we rebooted it at 3:20am. Also, we’ve postponed adding the 4Gb Seagate Cheetah to Bolt (shell.sonic.net) until 3am Saturday morning. (A cabling problem prevented this morning’s upgrade.) -Scott

Wed Mar 19 12:23:19 PST 1997 — Pacific Bell will be doing some work on our hunt group on Thursday morning at 4am. They are expecting to be done by 5am, so we hope for a minimum of interruption. Basicly, we’re reordering part of the telephone hunt group at the very beginning – if you find that you’re getting busy signals or no answer after 4am tommorow, and you must get online, you can try dialing 522-1040 which is a number in our group that is past the area that will be worked on. -Dane

Yesterday afternoon, we added a new feature…
Thu Mar 13 22:36:55 PST 1997 — Yesterday afternoon, we added a new feature to our web server: the software can now verify a Sonic member’s password (via an authentication server) before offering ‘intranet’ services. This gives us a foundation upon which we can build new web-based interfaces for services requiring user authentication. (Examples: changing passwords, uploading web pages, configuring MS Frontpage bots, etc.) So far, we’ve noticed one problem: the web logs didn’t rotate correctly last night, so a lot of ‘today’s’ web hits were logged in ‘yesterday’s’ log files. I’ll be watching tonight to ensure that the automatic log rotation works as it should. -Scott
Trials of our new web server software started
Wed Mar 12 03:15:23 PST 1997 — Trials of our new web server software started yesterday. We’ve grafted our locally-developed authentication libraries into our web server software, which means the web server can verify a member’s password (via an authentication server) before offering ‘intranet’ services. Some example applications we’ve planned to offer via a web interface: password changes; support for Netscape Gold and Microsoft Frontpage publication; even an ‘account status’ page where members can update their mailing address in our database. While the latter may take a while, we plan to offer the former (password changes) sometime this week — assuming the trials work out. We are conducting trials on a testbed server, and plan to put this new server into production as ‘www.sonic.net’ in a day or two. Please read the ‘sonic.net’ newsgroup for more propellor-head information. -Scott

Thu Mar 6 06:01:00 PST 1997 — UUNet used their maintenance window this morning to upgrade some routers in Santa Clara. Unfortunately, their global routing information didn’t match the state of their network, resulting in the unreachability of some networks between ~ 4:47 and 4:56, which is when we manually shifted to the MCI circuit. UUNet completed their upgrades before 6am, at which time we re-enabled that path. -Scott

Thu Mar 6 04:56:10 PST 1997 — UUNet is using their maintenance window to upgrade some routers in Santa Clara. Unfortunately, their global routing information didn’t (and still doesn’t) match the state of their network, resulting in the unreachability of some networks between ~ 4:47 and now (4:56). We’ve shifted to the MCI circuit until the upgrades are completed — UUNet expects to be done before 6am. -Scott
