Wed Mar 12 03:15:23 PST 1997 — Trials of our new web server software started yesterday. We’ve grafted our locally-developed authentication libraries into our web server software, which means the web server can verify a member’s password (via an authentication server) before offering ‘intranet’ services. Some example applications we’ve planned to offer via a web interface: password changes; support for Netscape Gold and Microsoft Frontpage publication; even an ‘account status’ page where members can update their mailing address in our database. While the latter may take a while, we plan to offer the former (password changes) sometime this week — assuming the trials work out. We are conducting trials on a testbed server, and plan to put this new server into production as ‘www.sonic.net’ in a day or two. Thu Mar 6 06:01:00 PST 1997 — UUNet used their maintenance window this morning to upgrade some routers in Santa Clara. Unfortunately, their global routing information didn’t match the state of their network, resulting in the unreachability of some networks between ~ 4:47 and 4:56, which is when we manually shifted to the MCI circuit. UUNet completed their upgrades before 6am, at which time we re-enabled that path. -Scott

Sun Mar 2 10:58:21 PST 1997 — Our eris authentication library had some troubles, and some users may have been unable to check POP mail for a while. Fri Feb 28 14:30:37 PST 1997 — The new news server is having some trouble, and we’re currently checking it’s filesystems. It should be back online in a few minutes. -Dane

Thu Feb 27 18:58:10 PST 1997 — During a tape backup, the shell server had trouble with it’s SCSI bus and needed to be rebooted. It was back online in a few minutes – sorry for the interruption. -Dane

Wed Feb 26 03:13:19 PST 1997 — On Wednesday February 26th, at about 3am, we commissioned our new network news server. This new server has a larger and faster disk array, which will allow us to keep news on the server longer, as well as accept more news peers. While we’ve attempted to make this upgrade as seamless as possible, the new server may not act exactly like the old server did — your patience as we iron out any problems is greatly appreciated.
